about

The American Polka, Kingdom Coming

The American Polka was made popular by the Québécois fiddle player Jean Carignan (1916-1988) and was recorded on the album Jean Carignan & l'Orchestre des Grands Ballets Canadiens (1981).
The second polka which continues in the same good-time vibe is an American song of the 1850's also known as The Year of Jubilo. It was written by Henry Clay Work (1832-1884) whose best known creations include My Grandfather's Clock and Marching Through Georgia.
Over the years, there have been suggestions that I record with my eponymous musical friend Gerry 'Banjo' O'Connor. I have had the track title in mind since we performed together at the TG4 Grádam Ceoil Awards in 2004 and I am delighted to get a chance to use it!
